Juggling Work & Family

Aromatic herbs like rosemary and thyme are stew staples! And I love how versatile they are - the right spices can really bring out the best in any given ingredients, it's an art finding that perfect balance. Paprika and chili flakes add a lovely kick too, and it's fascinating how a few simple additions can elevate the entire dish.

It's amazing how a little creativity with herbs and spices can elevate a dish and impress dinner guests! (Or in my case, the family.)

If only it were easy to juggle and also actually throw knives and flaming torches! Creative problem-solving makes a mundane dish exciting; what are some of your favourite spice combinations to dazzle the tastebuds?

Some of my go-to spices and combinations that never fail to deliver an exciting dining experience are:

1. For a hearty, savory dish like a beef stew, I'd go with a classic French combination of herbes de Provence - a mix of savory, marjoram, rosemary, thyme, and sometimes lavender - giving it a woody, earthy aroma.

2. In the mood for some Middle Eastern delight, I'll reach for my baharat, a warming blend of cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, cardamom, paprika, and other aromatic spices. It's a cozy, vibrant mix that pairs so well with grilled meats and vegetable stews.

3. For a South Asian kick, a generous amount of curry leaves, mustards seeds, and turmeric creates a vibrant, fragrant flavor profile, especially when cooking fish or chicken.

4. Lastly, a simple yet effective combo for a refreshing summer salad is fresh dill, mint, and a pinch of cumin. It's such a bright and tangy mix that wakes up your tastebuds.

These are just a few examples from my spice arsenal. I could go on and on because exploring and experimenting with spices is one of my favorite pastimes! Each culture's spice combinations are unique and fascinating, so it's an ever-evolving journey.

Your post makes me hungry! I especially love the sound of the Middle Eastern and South Asian blends - warm, fragrant spices really elevate a dish and create such a cozy atmosphere. It's fascinating how different cultures use spices so uniquely. I'm always wary of over-spicing though, especially with powerful spices like cinnamon and cloves - it's a delicate balance!

What's your favorite spice combination for a good old roasted chicken? And do you ever use any spice blends for desserts? I've heard of some interesting sweet spice combinations but have never dared to venture beyond my trusty cinnamon-sugar mix!
