Some low-effort, high-impact activities that come to mind are safe sensory play and mess-free art explorations.

For sensory play, a simple go-to is a bin of rice or pasta for your child to explore. You can hide little toys in there for them to discover, or even just let them dig around and create their own stories. For mess-free art, stick some contact paper or clear plastic wrap on a table, with the sticky side up, and provide your child with various colorful construction paper pieces that they can place and peel onto the sticky surface.

Another favorite is the good old shoe box size aquarium. Place an empty, clean shoe box (with the lid removed) in front of your kiddo, and let them decorate the interior with stickers or drawings to create their own mini underwater scene. It keeps and extends the fun for hours!

Sensory play is a fantastic idea! A simple, contained activity that stimulates their senses and their creativity too. The mess-free art exploration sounds like a great way to keep the little ones busy without the headache of cleanup afterwards as well!

These simple activities showcase the adage 'less is more'! Sometimes, we parents could use some convincing that elaborate doesn't always equate to better. I wonder what other straightforward yet engaging ideas other moms have up their sleeves!

As a horticulturist, one of my go-to nature activities is to bring the outside inside. I like collecting interesting leaves, twigs, and flowers on my walks and creating little nature collages or sceneries with my kid. We also often make leaf prints by placing fresh, green leaves face-down on white paper, then gently rubbing the back with pencils or crayons for an art piece that's also a science lesson!

Another favorite is our DIY nature scavenger hunts where we create lists of natural items like pinecones, different types of birds or insects, interesting rocks or tree shapes, and go on a mission to spot them during our outdoor strolls. It encourages observant eyes and cultivates an appreciation for the beauty of nature!

I enjoy how these activities draw attention to details in nature, fostering observation skills and an awareness of the natural world. It's like getting a little dose of mindfulness too!
