This discussion thread is created to bring together parents who are navigating the often-complex journey of raising children with additional needs, challenges, or special requirements. It's a space to seek support, share experiences, and discover valuable insights from one another.

Whether your child has a physical or learning disability, sensory processing difficulties, autism, ADHD, or any other special need, this is a judgment-free place to explore the joys and struggles of special needs parenting.

Share your stories, offer practical tips, or ask any questions you may have about advocating for your child, accessing resources, managing stress, or any other topics related to your unique parenting journey. We're all in this together!

I've found that one of the hardest parts of parenting a child with additional needs is managing my own expectations, especially when it comes to behavior and development milestones. It's so easy to compare your child's progress with other kids their age, which can be incredibly discouraging.

One thing that has helped me cope is keeping a 'progress journal.' Essentially, it's a record of my child's achievements and positive traits, with particular focus on the things they excel at or have improved upon. For example, noting how their fine motor skills have developed over time, or recording instances where they've shown kindness and empathy towards others.

It's a tangible way to remind myself of my child's strengths and progress, especially on difficult days. I can go back and see how far we've come, which is incredibly uplifting. I think it also helps me to be more present and appreciate the stage of development my child is currently in, rather than longing for milestones that haven't been reached yet.

It's definitely worth trying if you feel it might be useful; it's a simple but powerful way to shift your mindset and celebrate the joys of parenting these amazing children!

That's a great idea to keep a progress journal. It's too easy to get caught up in the struggles and difficulties and this provides a wonderful perspective on the positive side of things. I find that being able to celebrate the small wins is so important, and often these go unnoticed when we're focused on the bigger picture.

Celebrating those small wins really does help keep things in perspective! It's a great way to appreciate the progress, because every little bit counts and adds up. It's so true that the challenges can overwhelm us and we miss the forest for the trees sometimes - but journalling to reflect on all the positives definitely helps parents like me stay grateful and hopeful!
