What makes a game fun? And what do kids find engaging and enjoyable? These two elements often go hand-in-hand, but they don’t always have to!
A great fun learning game should capture a toddler's natural curiosity and innate desire to learn about the world around them, especially when it involves sensory, physical, and cognitive exploration. The best part is that these games also sneak in some learning while having fun!
Here are a few ideas for fun learning games, many of which require little to no setup or materials:
1. Sensory play with household items: For this game, use safe, everyday objects like uncooked pasta, rice, or beans and let your toddler explore the different textures and sounds they make when manipulated in different ways (pouring, scooping, raking).
2. Indoor scavenger hunt: Create a scavenger hunt around your home with clues that are easy for toddlers to solve. Encourage them to collect and hide the items, building anticipation and excitement!
3. Sound game: Go on a sound adventure! Whether outdoors or indoors, listen together for different sounds and try to guess what makes each one. You can even assign a points system for added fun and some friendly competition!
4. Obstacle course challenge: Create an obstacle course with household items and daily objects; cushions become mountains to climb over, broomsticks are balance beams, and so on! Time each other and cheer loudly!
5. The 'What's Missing?' game: Choose a few everyday items and place them in front of your toddler. Then, remove one item and have them guess what's missing. Encourage them to explain their answer too!
The key is keeping it simple, fun, and engaging, which I'm sure you'll all nail with flying colours! What are some of your go-to fun learning games?
