So many mamas face feeding challenges whether they breastfeed, pump, or do a combination of both! I thought it would be helpful to have a thread where we can share our struggles and successes - especially for those hard first few weeks when everything feels so new.

What were some of your early feeding challenges? How did you tackle them? And what went well for you?

I'll go first! My son had trouble latching at first and it was really painful for me. I ended up using a nipple shield which helped enormously, and after a few weeks he got the hang of it and we stopped needing it. But those first couple of days were so tough - I was in a lot of pain and felt like he wasn't getting enough milk. Thankfully my midwives were so supportive and helped us get through it but it was a scary time. I'm happy to report that four months later he's an excellent eater!

What are your stories?

My biggest challenge was feeling like my milk supply wasn't keeping up with my baby's demands. I tried everything - pumping after feeds, power pumping, lactation cookies and teas, but nothing seemed to make a difference. What helped me was really focusing on efficient feeding positions and getting him to latch better. My let-down was slow and my son would get frustrated and start drinking aggressively, which led to a lot of gas and spit up.

I worked on getting him to latch deeper and slower, which helped him digest the foremilk better and reduced all the spits and pukes! Fed is best, so if you're struggling I recommend talking to a healthcare professional - there's no shame in supplementing or switching to formula if that's what's best for your baby and your health!

It does get easier, mamas!

That's fantastic advice about focusing on positions and latching to increase milk supply - it can make a huge difference! It's so individual too, which is often overlooked - what worked for me was expressing after every feed but it doesn't work that way for everyone.

It's great you're spreading the word that there's no one right way and fed really is best!

Position and latch are such important factors, and it's so true that every experience is different - what works for some doesn't work for others! Expressing after each feed is such a great strategy, it really helped to boost your supply.

It's all about finding that right balance for baby and mama too - Fed is best, and it's great to hear you're helping other mamas find their way too!

It's helpful to share our individual experiences, as it gives other mamas ideas and strategies to try - especially when you're exhausted and doing everything you can to feed your little one. Knowing some of the options that have worked for others can be a huge help!

Finding that balance is so important - and yes, fed is best. I've really been enjoying helping other mamas figure out what works for them too; it's such a joy to support each other in these early days.
