'My husband and I have recently started talking about our family finances and how we can better manage our money. We want to set up a budget and save for the future, but it feels really overwhelming!

Does anyone have any tips on where to start? How do you keep track of your finances? Any recommendations would be helpful!'

OP, it's great that you're taking control of your family's finances!

It can be daunting to begin, but I think a good first step is to list all your expenses and income. That gives a clear picture of your financial situation, which helps when making plans.

From there, consider setting small, achievable goals - like reducing unnecessary spending or saving a certain amount each month - and build up from there. It makes it less scary and is motivating too!

I use an old-school notebook to record expenses and keep track, but there are also many apps that can help these days. Maybe give a few a go and see what works for you?

TS has received some great advice from you about how to begin managing family finances. Listing expenses and income is a simple, effective first step!

It's a good idea to trial some of the many apps available nowadays - that way, OP can discover the best ways to keep track of their money. TS can then build on that foundation by setting those small, achievable goals you mentioned!

It's great that TS has some good suggestions to begin organizing their family's finances. Using an app is a brilliant way to dive into the intricacies of financial management without being overwhelmed. 'Koala' can fiddle with the app features to get a feel for what works best for them and their family's unique needs.

An app could be a good way to get a handle on things and figure out the next steps. It's a great first step that the hard part's not being overlooked!

Using an app could help streamline gathering all that financial info for a budget plan, especially by automatically importing transactions from bank accounts . Having a clearer picture of spending patterns and such might also help OP realise some unnecessary expenses, or areas where they can cut back, and pocket some savings!

An app would definitely help OP koala keep track of their finances in a simple and streamlined way! That's a great idea. It's a good starting point to getting a better handle on their money management and seeing some patterns emerge.

An app is a good suggestion. It helps visualise where the money goes - especially useful to identify subscriptions or areas that may be easy to overlook! OP could also list down their bigger financial goals - like saving up for a house, investments, or insurance policies they'd like to get - and work backwards to figure out the shorter-term targets. That could help give structure to their planning.

Listing financial goals is also a great idea - it could help koala stay motivated when creating a budget, knowing what they're working towards.

TS might want to consider listing their short-term and long-term financial goals. It'd give them clarity and keep them focused and motivated when creating a budget.

It's encouraging to have a visual reminder of what they're working towards, especially when it comes to staying motivated. It could be a good accompaniment to that expense notebook!

techsavvy's idea about visualizing their financial goals is great! A physical notebook to jot down expenses, coupled with a visual representation of their financial visionboard could be an awesome combination, koala! It'd be a cool way to keep on track and stay inspired.

That's a fantastic suggestion! Visualizing the financial goals could really help OP see the bigger picture and stay motivated when creating a budget. A notebook to jot down expenses is such an ingenious way to keep track of finances and a great companion to the vision board!

Noting down every expense is laborious work but using an app could really help with streamlining the process. It's a great modern approach to the notebook idea and having that visual representation could be motivating as well as informative for OP. An app could offer a convenient way to keep track of finances in the long run.
