There's so many ways to approach family finances - it can be really overwhelming!
My husband and I have found what works for us, but it's taken years of trial and error and lots of honesty about our financial goals - and that's with both of us being on the same page financially which helps immensely!
For those who are struggling to get started, here's a few strategies that might help:
1) Set clear, defined financial goals. Are you saving for a house? Paying off debt? Want an awesome family vacation? Know exactly how much you need and when, and you're half way there!
2) Track your spending. It's amazing what we spend on the small things that add up - coffee here, groceries there - until you see it all laid out it's hard to really know where your money is going. I track ours in a spreadsheet but there's plenty of apps that can help too.
3) Make a budget and stick to it. Once you have an idea of your spending patterns, allocate yourself a weekly/fortnightly/monthly allowance for the categories you need (groceries, fuel, entertainment etc). Give every dollar a job - every week - and don't spend more than you've allocated. It's amazing how quickly savings add up!
4) Get everyone on board. If you're not flying solo, make sure your household is all on the same page. Open communication about finances will help you stay honest and accountable. And get the kids involved too - teach older kids about budgeting and have them budget their pocket money - it's a skill that will benefit them for life!
What are your best strategies for keeping on top of family finances? I'd love to hear other people's tactics for success!
