This is such an important conversation and I’m so glad we can share our stories here!
As someone who has both fostered and adopted, I have found that connecting with others who are walking a similar path has been incredibly helpful - it's reassuring and healing to know we're not alone in this. Whether your journey has just begun or you’re further down the road, what do you find most helps you connect and feel supported?
For me, hearing other people's stories and knowing I'm not alone in the challenges and triumphs is such a bonding experience. There are so many unique circumstances and experiences within the fostering and adoption journeys, but there are also common themes and emotions that we all seem to share. I think it’s these shared experiences that help us connect with others and feel understood.
I'll kick things off by sharing one of my own. One of my adopted children had some complex needs that we weren't aware of at the time of placement, and this turned our world upside down for a while. It was so difficult to manage the unexpected behavioral challenges, and I felt incredibly isolated during this period. But connecting with other parents who had gone through something similar helped me feel understood and normalised my experience. Knowing I wasn’t alone, and learning from others' experiences, was invaluable. It helped me better understand my child's needs and find new ways to support them.
So, what moments or stories do you feel comfortable sharing? What's helping you stay sane and supported on this journey?
