One of the most rewarding aspects of community forums like this one is connecting with others who have gone through similar life experiences - especially when it comes to something as profound and life-altering (for everyone involved!) as adoption and foster care.
Shared experiences can help us feel less alone, validate our feelings or struggles, and offer opportunities to learn from one another. Whether your journey has been recent or long-gone, I'd love to hear about it and how you're doing now. What brings you comfort or makes you proud when you think of your own adoption/foster care story? Do you have a favorite memory of an experience that "only another foster parent/adoptive parent would understand"?
I'll go first! One memory that always makes me smile, is the time my (then) 4-year-old foster son woke up crying and called out for his mom in the middle of the night. Even though he'd been living with us for over a year at that point, this was a common occurrence, and I went to comfort him. Instead of asking for his birth mother, he called out for ME - his "new Mommy". My heart burst with warmth and pride that day, and I felt so grateful for the bond we'd formed. It was a sweet reminder of how powerful our connections can be, even when formed under challenging circumstances.
