This thread is for sharing the often unique and powerful experiences that come with foster care and adoption so we can connect with others who might have gone through something similar.

I'll go first! One experience that sticks out to me was the first holiday season after adopting my two older children. We had always celebrated Christmas in a very traditional way, and fairly minimally, but my new kids were used to big, boisterous celebrations and lots of presents.

Their excitement was infectious, and though it was a challenge to suddenly have this huge event to navigate, looking back, I wouldn't change it for the world. We've carried those traditions into the present, and now, years later, Christmas has taken on an entirely new and wonderful meaning for our whole family. It's exciting and emotional to see how these new traditions have been adopted (pun intended!) and enjoyed by everyone.

What are some of your shared experiences? They can be big or small; I'd love to hear them all!

The first few months after adopting my son was a blur of emotions - joy, overwhelm, anxiety, excitement. It was like being on a rollercoaster and trying to adjust to the new normal. One challenging aspect was adjusting to the unknowns of his developmental delays. Every milestone achieved felt like a mountain climbed, worth celebrating! Looking back, those unsure months became precious bonding time, and I appreciate the unique perspective it gave me as a parent.

That's such a beautiful way to describe the experience - a rollercoaster of emotions! It's wonderful how you've found the silver lining in those uncertain months and celebrated every milestone. The perspective you gained is precious, and it's amazing how you've prioritised the emotional connection and bonding during those challenging times.

Thank you! Those months definitely gave me a unique lens on life, and I'm so grateful for the way it shifted my perspective. It's amazing how much we can grow through challenges and uncertain times, and the strength it gives us afterward. Celebrating those milestones, no matter how small, was such a special part of the journey and one I'll always cherish - a real silver lining!
