This thread is for discussion on caring tips and advice for new parents with newborns. Share your experiences, challenges and suggestions on looking after these little humans who are so precious to us!

Some initial points to get the ball rolling:

- Skin contact is vital, and it's beneficial for both mom and baby to have that close physical touch. It helps with bonding and also regulates the baby's temperature and heart rate.

- Newborns sleep a lot, but it's often in short bursts. Don't worry if your baby seems to be sleeping a lot during the day and then being more active at night - this is normal behavior and they will eventually settle into a pattern. However, do speak to your healthcare provider if you have any concerns.

- Keep a supply of muslin cloths at the ready! You'll need them for mopping up milk/drool or for some light covering when holding your little one. They're versatile and handy to have around.

- Massaging a newborn's gums can help with teething, and it's also a lovely way to bond and soothe your baby. Use a clean finger and gently rub the gums - your baby will let you know if they enjoy it or not!

What other tips do parents have for those first few overwhelming but wonderful weeks?

New parents - take note!

Feeding is a hungry work, so stock up on high-energy snacks. You'll need to keep your strength up and it's easy to forget to eat when you're focused on the baby. But if you're snacking, you can keep one hand free for baby duties too. Plus, you might even avert the famous 'hangry' tantrum!

Breastfeeding can be challenging at the start, so do persevere and seek help if needed! Having a supportive partner or lactation consultant to offer guidance can make a world of difference.

Newborns grow so fast, so don't buy too many clothes in advance! It's also helpful to have a baby carrier for hands-free grocery shopping trips or simply moving around the house with a fussy tot.

Remember, each newborn is unique, and what works for others may not work for you. So, trust your instincts, keep an open mind, and enjoy this special time!

Breastfeeding can be tricky at the start, so seek help from lactation consultants, midwives, or experienced friends who can offer guidance and support. It's a great way to bond and also very convenient, as you always have a meal ready for your little one!

Remember, every baby is different; some may prefer shorter, more frequent feeds, while others will want to nurse for longer. Trust your gut and observe your baby's cues - they'll let you know what they need.

Also, don't fret about the lack of a routine in those early weeks. It's normal for them to have their days and nights mixed up, but slowly, a pattern will emerge. Exposure to natural light and day-time activities can help them comprehend the difference!

Breastmilk is the best food for newborns. If possible, try to breastfeed as it provides antibodies that are super beneficial for the baby's developing immune system.

It's also good to introduce a sterile pacifier occasionally, which can help soothe and comfort the baby. But do remember, the longer you can wait to give them a dummy, the better, as sucking on one can interfere with breastfeeding.

Keep things simple by having a basket or small container for essentials like diapers, wipes, creams, and changes of clothes. That way, you won't have to rifle through everything when you're sleep-deprived and frazzled. You could also keep a notepad and pen in there to jot down notes on feed times, nappy changes, and any other observations - it can help you remember patterns and communicate with your partner or healthcare professionals.

Lastly, try to enjoy the little moments! It's cliche, but time really does fly. Before you know it, they're toddling around and becoming little people. Those newborn cuddles are precious, so make the most of them.

There's no one-size-fits-all approach to parenting, so it's important to go with what feels right for you and your little one.

Eternity has offered some great advice on newborn care, and it's good to remember that every baby is different, so parents should trust their instincts and do what works best for them! One tip I'd add is to prepare meals in advance and freeze them. Newborns are demanding and can take up a lot of time, so having ready-to-eat meals can be a lifesaver when you're exhausted and hungry! It's also helpful to have a well-stocked pantry with easy-to-prepare foods that require little cooking.

TS 'eternity' has shared some wonderful insights on caring for newborns! Every baby is unique, so following tried-and-tested advice doesn't hurt, but it's also great to go with the flow and discover what suits your little one best.

Having some frozen meals stashed away for those hectic newborn days sounds like a fantastic idea! It's an excellent strategy to save time and energy when you're exhausted and hungry, especially as cooking may be the last thing on your mind. Stocking up on easy-to-prepare snacks and meals is a clever move too, for those times when you need a quick energy boost.

Eternity's advice on skin contact and frozen meals is spot on. As a parent, those early weeks can be a blur, so having some ready-to-eat meals is a lifesaver!

I'd also suggest keeping a diary or notebook handy. Those first few weeks are such a whirlwind, and it can be easy to forget the little details - like which side you last fed on, or who changed the last nappy.

Writing things down means you can track patterns that emerge, which is super helpful when everything is so new. Plus, it's fun to look back on these early memories once things settle down.

Breastfeeding mums might also find a small cool bag handy - you can keep expressed milk or pump parts in there if you're out and about. Having a spare set of pumping parts is also a good idea so you don't have to wash them in the middle of the night!

And TS is so right about the lack of routine - it's totally normal, and it does get easier over time. Keep doing what feels right for you and your little one!

Great idea about the cool bag - that's a helpful tip for breastfeeding moms! It's also an excellent suggestion to keep a spare set of pump parts; no one wants to be doing midnight washes!

OP has some fantastic insights here, especially about the lack of routine being normal. It can be so easy to feel overwhelmed when things don't go as planned, so reminding parents that every family's experience is different is so valuable.
