Share your best budgeting tips for families!

What are some of your go-to money-saving hacks that keep your family's finances on track? Do you have a tried-and-true method for keeping within (or under!) your monthly budget? How do you manage groceries, entertainment, and those hidden expenses that can blow a budget?

Let's pool our collective wisdom and create a go-to guide for keeping family finances afloat!

Meal planning is key for our family to save on groceries, which is often our biggest expense. I sit down once a week, check what's in the fridge and pantry, and plan 5-6 dinners. I also involve my kids in deciding the meals so that they're on board too.

We also have a 'no buy' rule for unnecessary items. If we run out of something that isn't a staple food or absolute necessity, we do without it until the next shop. This curbs impulse buying and saves us from wasting money on things we don't really need.

For entertainment, we opt for free options like parks, libraries, and community events as much as possible. When we do go to paid attractions, we look out for deals and discounts online or buy annual passes if we know it's somewhere we'll visit often. These strategies have helped us stay within our budget every month!

What other families doing to keep their costs down? I'd love to hear more tips!

Meal prep is a great way to save money and time, and getting your kids involved is an excellent way to get them to try new foods too!

Involving the whole family in deciding their week's meals is fun and also helps with creating an efficient grocery list. Then everyone feels invested in the process and are more likely to eat the meals and not ask for takeaway!

We also do the same with entertainment - we exhaust all free options first, especially as kids often just want the experience of being somewhere new, which a park or library offers. And then if we go anywhere that costs money, it's a special treat and something we've all agreed on beforehand.

Our biggest saving tip is to keep a 'mistakes jar'. We put any loose change in there, plus any notes we have lying around the house - it's amazing how much builds up over time! It feels like free money and helps us resist the urge to splurge on unnecessary items.

Those are some great ideas!

We also meal prep, and it's helped us save so much money - and eat better too! We involve our kids by letting them pick a new recipe every week from a kids' cookbook we have. It encourages them to try new things and also teaches them an important cooking skill.

I love the entertainment idea too - we often go for park outings and trips to the library, especially now that the weather's nicer. Making use of free attractions is something we've been doing more of recently. And I never thought of a mistakes jar - that's such a clever idea! We tend to just throw change into a drawer but the visual aspect of a jar would make it feel more real, and like you say, exciting to see it build up!

Meal prepping is a fantastic way to save money and eat well - involving the kids in the process is a wonderful idea too! Getting them to help choose the recipes is a great way to encourage them to explore new foods and learn some cooking skills along the way.

Park outings and library trips are awesome, low-cost ways to keep the family entertained. Making use of free attractions can make for some lovely days out - especially when the weather's nice!

The mistakes jar is a visual way to save. It's amazing how quickly change can add up when you see it right before your eyes. Seeing the jar fill up can be a great visual motivator and a fun family challenge!

It's heartening to hear these great ideas being shared - it's so helpful to hear about others' experiences!

Absolutely! We love getting our kids involved in meal prepping - it makes them more open to trying new foods and it's a fun family activity, plus it saves us money on takeaway!

We also love a good old picnic in the park - it's amazing how much fun the simple things can be. A scavenger hunt around the park with items to find, or a game of frisbee golf using some old CD's is a great way to keep the kids entertained without breaking the bank. Keeping them occupied doesn't have to cost the earth!

The mistakes jar is a brilliant idea that we've used before too - it's fascinating to watch the money grow and it really hammers home the message of saving!

Meal prepping is a great idea to save money and get the kids involved too - it's a win-win! We've found that meal prepping also makes dinner time so much easier, especially after a long day.

We love the idea of a scavenger hunt at the park - will have to give that a go next time we head out! And the old CDs frisbee golf idea is genius - might have to borrow that one! The kids'll love it. Anything to keep them entertained without the cost of so many toys and games is a huge help!

Meal prepping is a real time saver - and great fun for the kids too! It's amazing how creative they can get with their lunchboxes, especially as a family effort.

The park scavenger hunt is a simple yet effective idea - enjoy! And the CD frisbee golf is such a fun, frugal activity that can keep them occupied for hours - enjoy some family competition!

Lunchbox creativity sounds like so much fun and a great way to involve the whole family. Love the idea of making meal prepping a family activity!

Scavenger hunts are simple yet effective - especially when the little ones start getting cabin fever. And CD frisbee golf? Sign us up! What a fantastic, frugal way to keep the family entertained and engaged.

Meal prepping together can be such a blast and also teaches some important life skills, especially with older kids! Scavenger hunts are a great way to get everyone moving and keep them entertained without anyone realizing it's educational too. We love hearing creative, budget-friendly ideas like this - thank you for sharing your fun family activities!

It's a wonderful way to engage with your kids and instill some valuable life skills - budgeting being one of them! Hunting for bargains, finding deals, and planning meals around sales & seasonal produce is such a helpful skill, and can definitely make family meal times more exciting too. Scavenger hunts are so versatile too; you could tailor it to suit the theme or season, making it an ongoing, evolving activity! Love it!
