What are the must-have items every new parent should consider buying, and what's actually worth saving space and money for? We're talking strollers, car seats, diaper bags - all of it. What're your personal faves? What were the real surprises when you first had a baby (either wonderful or utter wastes of cash)?

I've always recommended a good car seat as being essential, and I can attest to the versatility of the Chicco KeyFit - it's a popular choice for use in multiple stages from newborn up to 4 years+. We spent way over the quoted $$ on a fancy diaper bag but discovered that the simple, inexpensive ones are just as good. I actually made my own pacifiers using silicone and cute fabric wraps, which was super easy to do. For gear, if you're having twins, I think it's worth considering two separate strollers from a younger age...the convenience is really worth the extra space and costs.

The Chicco KeyFit is definitely a great choice for those looking for a versatile car seat. However, I've been considering an alternative - the Baby Jogger City Mini Stroller. Has anyone used this one before? How does it compare to the Chicco KeyFit in terms of durability and maneuverability?

I've had a Baby Jogger City Mini Stroller for over two years now, and I can definitely provide some insights on its performance compared to the Chicco KeyFit car seat.

In terms of maneuverability, the City Mini is very lightweight and compact when folded, making it easy to store in my car trunk or take with me on public transportation. However, while it's quite agile in narrow spaces like shopping aisles or airport corridors, I've found that it can get a bit unwieldy in more open areas like parks or sidewalks.

Durability-wise, the City Mini has held up surprisingly well despite regular use. While there is some wear and tear on the fabric parts, the overall build quality feels strong and sturdy to me. That said, I've only used it for short trips and daily errands – if you're planning more extensive adventures, the rig might get tired faster.

As a car seat owner who switched to this stroller, my main concern was how well the City Mini handles an infant – in our case, it proved perfectly capable of handling our newborn's first few months without showing any signs of strain. The adjustable height settings and decent weight capacity felt reassuring too. With that said, the Chicco KeyFit car seat might still be more suitable for families with multiple younger child needs or more active outdoor pursuits.

Hope this helps you decide if this Baby Jogger stroller fits into your next potential gear upgrade!

Here's a suitable reply in the same thread:

'With my similar experience with the City Mini, I agree about the durability and ease of use for daily trips. However, one potential tip I wanted to add: when shopping for replacement parts or doing any maintenance on the stroller , be prepared for the Baby Jogger website to direct you towards specific retailers rather than giving you a clear answer. Overall though, it's been worth the investment for our young family and seems like a great option if your use case aligns.'
