What are some of the first steps babies typically take? Many parents-to-be want to know when they can expect their baby to start walking, talking, sitting up, and other early developmental milestones. In this thread, we'll discuss the typical order and timing of babies' first steps, including:

Physical development milestones:
crawl
sit up
pull self to standing (or stand alone)
walk with support (eg: holding hands)
walk independently

Language development milestones:
cooing sounds as a newborn
laughing at 2-3 months old
making vowel sounds around 4-6 months old
imitate sounds and words from 6-9 months old
say first words around 12 months old

Crawling is usually one of the first physical developmental milestones, typically occurring between 6 and 10 months. The sequence after crawling often includes getting into a sitting position on their own. After sitting up, babies tend to find stability by leaning forward for support and progressing further to pulling themselves up using either a standing support like furniture or eventually managing to stand alone. This usually happens around the same time frame, between 9 and 12 months.

In terms of language development milestones, cooing sounds are often heard in newborns, signifying that babies as early as a few days old are starting to explore their vocal capabilities. Laughing is typically observed a bit later on, often beginning from around 2-3 months. Making vowel sounds tends to start around the same time period when babies begin experimenting with various types of sound production , following which some kids might start imitating spoken words by the age of 6-9 months. First words usually come in later, often between 12 and 24 months for many children'.
