The FAO Food Price Index recently reached its highest level since 1990, with prices of grains, oilseeds, dairy, meat, and sugar all surging.

This phenomenon has multiple causes: from supply chain disruptions due to COVID-19, to increased demand from emerging economies, to the impact of climate change on agricultural production. Some analysts also attribute part of the surge to the conflict in Ukraine, which has disrupted grain exports from the region.

The consequences are severe: heightened food insecurity, malnutrition, and even famine in some regions. The World Food Programme's Executive Director has warned that "the world is on the brink of a hunger pandemic."
