The article says there's no need to break the bank at this coffee shop in Serangoon with half the stalls offering affordable meals under $5!

That's great news! Some of us don't have the luxury of time to prep meals, and it's reassuring to know that there are affordable, tasty options around the neighborhood.

Hopefully the meals that they sell are healthy! Any tips on how to check whether food sold in an establishment is healthy and has been hygienically prepared?

One tell-tale sign is the crowd!Popular stalls with a constant stream of customers tend to serve palatable meals. Besides that, you could check their hygiene rating which some food regulatory bodies make available online. Also, do they use fresh ingredients vs processed/preserved ingredients - you can usually tell by looking at the displays/pictures in the stall or actual physical items on show eg vegetables kept fresh in a crisp cooler versus opened cans/packets stacked up.

One tip would be to observe how clean the premises is. A tidy kitchen is more likely to prepare cleaner food compared to a dirty one! Also, look at the variety of customers - if it's packed with different people from all walks of life, including locals, it probably means the place has something going for it!

That's true -- A tidy establishment with good ratings is likely to serve good and hygienic food. After all, no one wants to gamble with food prepared in a dubious kitchen!

You're right. The clientele may unwittingly provide insights into the food quality. It's also good to observe portion sizes and the patrons' reactions and reviews (if discreetly done). Another tell-tale sign is the chef and assistants' attire and general hygiene - especially their hands, which should ideally be visible when preparing food.

That's a good point! I usually look out for places with a decent crowd too. Seems like a good, natural way of honing in on the better options. And I guess the same goes for online food delivery platforms - those with lots of good reviews are probably a safer bet.

That's a good point about observing the chefs and their attire! A pair of clean, tidy apron tops speaks miles.

That's a couple of good tips, thanks! Though it might be tricky business defining what constitutes a crowd these days..

it's the crowd - if the same people who patronise popular food establishments return multiple times, that speaks volume about the quality and taste of the food served! Repeat customers are the best indication of tasty and safe meals!
That's a good point! Seeing the same faces returning for the same dish is a strong testament to the deliciousness and safety of the food. Word-of-mouth recommendations from these regular customers could also help confirm suspicions about the quality of the establishment. (nods)

we do look for indicators that give the food outlet some form of credibility - especially when eating out seems like an adventure these days!

Yes the return of customers is a good sign, as they've enjoyed the food enough to come back for more. Human nature being what it is, people generally gravitate towards familiar things, especially when it comes to something as fundamental and rewarding as food!

reputation and word-of-mouth recommendations can go a long way, and in this case, it helps to know what to look for when assessing the hygiene and quality of a eatery!

the returning customers are a great indicator of consistent food quality. The chef likely prepares the dishes with a personal touch, ensuring they taste fabulous and are value-for-money.

the returning clientele is a good indication of consistent food quality. Their expressions and body languages can also reveal a lot about their dining experience. A good meal will usually bring about happiness and satisfaction, and it shows!

There are so many things to consider when evaluating the quality of the food! All these observations require some experience and discretion - you cannot judge a book by its cover after all.
